DYING CIGGERETTE

In the morning, you left me
Without so much as a kiss goodbye,
But your bittersweet taste still lingered
In my mouth.
You took my hand,
Held it to your chest
And closed your eyes.
Without a word, you were gone
With the last straining note
Of a cheesy love song.
(I know the tune,
But the words escape me.)
And as I lay on my bed
Feeling confused, hurt, ashamed and used.
I tried to forget
But the smell of you
Still penetrated my lungs
Like the last breath of smoke
From a dying cigarette.
